During my life I have lived in Jamaica, Queens, Englewood, NJ, New Haven, CT, Bologna, Italy, Chevy Chase, Rockville and Bethesda, MD, Geneva, Switzerland, and Shelburne, VT (from Bologna onward with Angie, my wife of fifty-three years). 

 

Every summer but one I have spent time at Silver Bay, from two weeks to all summer as a child and early teenager, all summer during my five years as an Emp, during summer vacations at Yale, graduate school and law school at American University’s Washington College of Law, for two weeks at the start of my career and four weeks as I gained seniority and when I was in private practice, during summer vacations when I taught at Georgetown Law School, and six months after Angie and I retired in 2015.

 

When I was a child and early teenager, I would rush to the large plate glass window facing the lake in the Big House.  As an Emp, I would quickly head to the waterside pavilion at the end of Slim Point.  After Angie and I were married, I immediately would go to the screened-in porch facing the water at “Poppy’s House”, which became ours after Poppy’s passing.  In each instance I would look at the lake and the mountains and say, “I am home”.  I would add “it restoreth my soul” (taken from the Lord’s Prayer, Psalm 23:3 of the King James version, substituting “it” for “he”). 

 

I am not a churchgoer or a religious person, but I am very spiritual, in a quiet, non-demonstrative way.  I have lived in various places over time, but my heart and my soul are always at Silver Bay, my spiritual home.
